I was wondering what people think about american news media.

personally, i think it's mostly a propaganda format. either that or completely useless (i.e. OJ Simpson trial...who cares). for example, NBC is owned by GE, which in turn supllies the american military with a large part of their jet engines and rockets.

the only thing i can say i like on NBC is 'meet the press.' his name escapes me at the moment, but the host is very subjective, and asks really good questions.

and i absolutely can't stand CNN. at all. period.

does anyone know of good reliable sources for news? i've heard BBC is pretty good.

tim russert is it not? he comes off a little dry as compared to these new conservative-in-a-boxes msnbc/cnn are starting to pull in.

i do think that it's mostly propaganda. that's why i don't really pay attention to it unless it's stuff about the weather. i like to kind of keep up with news to a point though but i don't really commit to any certain "story" or whatever until i hear it from several different sources.

i think you were talking about www.gnn.tv

although it is really biased, it's from the point of view that i agree most with. so yeah.

if i'm ever in the mood for news though, i just watch the daily show. life's too short to be completely serious.

also, if anyone here has read George Orwell's 1984, does anyone else see a resemblence between Osama Bin Laden and 'Emanuel Goldstein' ?

and yeah, the daily show is probably my favorite news program. last night with Stephen Colbert was hillarious.

I personally think that the media in this country is evil. It consumes the average american, and they feed on it like vultures. Obviously, the media bottles up everything they want us to see, and they control what stories they think are important to american viewers. The sad thing is that a lot of americans can't see that. Personally, I can't watch the war anymore. It's not that I don't have a concern with what's going on with our country, but seriously, if something happens that america should know about, the media will let us know. This war is what I think america has been waiting for. It's basically (in common american's eyes) the best reality television program that has graced our television screens. It's all about ratings. I'll be damned if BET sells out, and shows the war over Comic View.

basically it's all just propaganda. the government tells us what will support its cause. plain and simple.

reality show....EXACTLY! thats just what it is. you hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial head. proverbially, of course.

hegemony.

probably 95% of tv stations are in some way shape or form owned by the government.... 6 degrees of separation like.

anyhow... i hate american news, but i ocassionally read bits and pieces to at least see what's going on.

a lot of worldwide political stuff can be found at globalpolicy.org... it's a UN site, so it's also not the most middle-of-the-road news source, but it sheds some light on how the UN is reacting to things that are going on stateside and so forth.

i found this sweet site a few weeks ago, but i forgot to add it to my favorites, and i haven't been able to find it since... makes me sad.
