Not sure how many of you read Adbusters but there is an absolutely brilliantly formed article in the latest issue that once and for all sheds light on what/who a Hipster is and why the lifestyle of a whole is detrimental to the youth of today:
We’ve reached a point in our civilization where counterculture has mutated into a self-obsessed aesthetic vacuum. So while hipsterdom is the end product of all prior countercultures, it’s been stripped of its subversion and originality.
i am an avid adbusters reader, so i just read this a week or two ago- fucking great, great write up. its such a great summary of something seemingly too large and fucking EVERYWHERE to tackle. seriously, incredible article.
It's really interesting / intriguing the comparison that was made with say, Punk Rockers or B-Boy's who clearly identify with their labels while Hipsters shun theirs. I might personally find hipsters less disgusting to look at if they'd just man up to what they are. Kids don't want to believe it I guess, you could make a checklist just as the article states: - American Apparel V-Neck - Parliament cigarettes - Tight Jeans - Pabst etc.
its just all consuming, a vacuum. their style is simply an amalgamation of past trends and fashions, and i like how dude makes the point of it being impossible to be or find anything genuinely "cool" anymore. the denial is just as much a part of it as anything else, so theoretically, this vacuum could be infinite. no ones "hipster"! (everyone is.)
another point the article made-It also tries with much difficulty to find its roots in the middle/lower classes (parliaments, pabst, etc), but is actually firmly rooted in the marketing of multi-million dollar corporations. It is the first "sub-culture" to be completely created under the industries microscope. disgusting.
The next group will try to alienate themselves even more so by claiming to have various mental sicknesses. Thanks 90s pill-happy doctors and mr. rogers.
every time i read an article like this it depresses me even more than living here does.....hah
eh fuck...I have a fixed gear....but umm i don't ride it to bars.....I ride it to work...I haven't bought a metrocard in 4 months, which feels pretty awesome
I have some cut-off jeans too...so i guess i'm a hipster...
i also go to the gym and have a northface jacket, hopefully that negates thing a little?
the cold war and the post 9/11 terror alerts, lies and fears were all things that made people lose their hair through anxiety and that build up just made everyone stupid as the article had said. A REAL event, happening right in front of an American, rather than something happening a million miles away which could be just a lie or something else to worry about may be a perfect sort of "catharsis". A war on U.S. soil another great depression Maybe shutting off the internet and cable television for a few days every month would be enough to stop everyones obsession with chic. Of course that would never happen here, too socialist... This comment will probably seem pretty stupid after i read it again tomorrow
I loved this article because I am such an anti-conformist conformist like these esoteric crunchy hipsters. My hometown of Colorado Springs is the mecha of hipsters, such ingenious progressives that steal from the conservative 'little Eichmanns' corporate game by weaving together past counter culture movements into an epic quilt of rebellion. I got some books you guys gotta read. Sorry I bumped this thread, with my booty-quick thrust. Heart, T-boz.
